Meet your Broker

After 19 years as a full-time agent and associate broker in Richmond, Virginia, I am thrilled to introduce my own brokerage, Dettbarn Real Estate. Nearly two decades ago, I obtained my Virginia Real Estate Salesperson license and joined Long & Foster Realtors’ Tuckahoe office. I earned my Virginia Real Estate Broker’s License in 2015, and in 2017 I left Long & Foster for Shaheen, Ruth, Martin & Fonville Real Estate.

Before embarking on a career in real estate, I worked in New York for the advertising firm McCann-Erickson. I left Manhattan in 2001 to move to Northern California, where I worked for a vintage race car specialist based at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma County. I am a graduate of the University of Virginia, from which I earned a BA in History in 1999. During my college years, I was a member of St. Anthony Hall and worked for G&W Motorsports, a Porsche racing team based at that time out of Waynesboro, Virginia.

Returning to Richmond in 2003 was coming home to a city I knew was an exceptional place for work and families. My first home had been a Cape Cod in the city, on Hanover Avenue; from there my family moved to a brick Colonial on Sunset Avenue in Henrico’s Westham neighborhood, whose creeks and wooded lots were and remain a paradise for children. We lived next in an Austin Davidson-built Colonial in Mooreland Farms, where my siblings and I sledded steep hills, explored the old airstrip and walked to the James River. We moved once more to Charnwood Road in Roslyn Hills, where I lived until I graduated from Collegiate School in 1994.

My wife, Sarah, and I now live with our two children in the Forest Ridge neighborhood of Henrico’s West End, barely a mile from where I grew up with my brother and sisters. A native of Ashland, Virginia, Sarah is a Registered Nurse on the Coronary Care ICU at VCU Medical Center. Our son, Gus, attends Tuckahoe Elementary School and our daughter, Margot, will begin Kindergarten at Collegiate School in 2023. When we’re not working, we enjoy watching our children swim and play at Kanawha Recreation Association, attending Gus’s games and Margot’s performances, participating in our neighborhood association and spending time with family and friends.
